How can I review the book without resorting to dreadful puns such as how the book was "magical", or that it "cast a spell on me"???

It's been three years since the last book, but within a very few pages, it was like greeting old friends again...It's been suggested that during that time, J.K. Rowling was suffering from "writer's block" - something she's refuted. But the extra time taken on the book shows..it's easily the most polished of the five books so far, and deals with some very sensitive subjects in a good, mature way...

Harry and his friends are very much teenagers now, with everything that brings...Will Harry find his first girlfriend??

All the regular characters are served well...altho fans of Hagrid will be disappointed - he doesn't appear until halfway through the book, and pretty much staysin the background...This is no bad thing, as it gives other characters time to come to the fore. Professor Umbridge, the new Defence against the Dark Arts teacher, is a wonderfully unlikeable creation, and her verbal sparring with Professor McGonagall are one of the highlights of the book...

There have also been claims that a major character gets killed off in this book, and that's true...It's also handled very sensitively, as well as having a number of red herrings along the way...

But what shines out most is the sheer style and exuberance of the writing style..always slightly "over the top", but wonderfully witty and funny...

Snape was no less obviously partisan; he had booked the Quidditch pitch for Slytherin practice so often that the Gryffindors had difficulty getting on it to play. He was also turning a deaf ear to the many reports of Slytherin attempts to hex Gryffindor players in the corridors. When Alicia Spinnet turned up in the hospital wing with her eyebrows growing so thick and fast they obscured her vision and obstructed her mouth, Snape insisted that she must have attempted a Hair-thickening Charm on herself and refused to listen to the fourteen eye-witnesses who insisted they had seen the Slytherin Keeper, Miles Bletchley, hit her from behind with a jinx while she worked in the library.

In a recent TV interview, J.K. Rowling confirmed that she has started work on Book 6, but as for long it would take...who knows??? Anyone any good at Divination?

In the meantime, I feel like starting again with "The Philosopher's Stone", and working forward...
